Now Reading - The Rook, by Daniel O'Malley

I picked up a sample of the new book "The Rook" by Daniel O'Malley, after seeing it on my favorite Sci Fi blog SFsignal.com.   By the time I finished the sample I was hooked and bought the book even at hardcover price.  (Kinde edition is $12.99)  But what a book!

It begins with a woman waking up and not knowing who she is.  And from there when she reads the notes her previous self has left for her, she is propelled on a non-stop adventure trying to figure out who she is (or was) and what is going on.

I heavily recommend this one.  It does start out a bit slow, but the humor and story pick up after about the first quarter of the book.  As "Rook Thomas" gets to know her personality and makes friends the story really starts to shine.  I am not done yet, but the bad guys and their propensity to make new types of humans such as via laser spine surgery are just terrifying!  I can't wait to find out how it ends.

 

Tricked - by Kevin Hearne, coming in April

Another new book I am excited about is Tricked, the next in the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne.  I love Atticus, the 1000 year old Druid who looks like a college student, and especially love his Irish wolfhound Oberon.   I also found out some really important information - Granouille is pronounced "grawn-ya-wale." I hope you are not looking for title loans Virginia because I am thinking that if you are low on money the last thing you need to do is lose your transportation to work.  I really feel for all the people still looking for work - the market is getting better but it still sucks out there.  My hubster is working his tail off in his new job and getting paid quite a lot less that he is worth and I know he's not the only one in that situation.  Well, I guess we all just have to do what we have to do.  One of these days companies are going to figure out what good talent is worth and wish they had held on to theirs better when they had the chance.  Companies that don't pay well or don't treat their employees well are going to find a lot of people moving away from them when things pick up.

Scarfing Up The Hunger Games Trilogy

I avoided reading The Hunger Games for a long time.  People were raving about it and I just hate to jump on a bandwagon.  After my neice told me that Twilight was fantastic, I read that and man it was awfull.  So I was avoiding  The Hunger Games as another peice of YA claptrap.

Well, I was broken down by there being a movie coming out.  I never like to see the movie before I read the book.  Also, Amazon has all three of the books on their free Prime lending list, and I hadn't borrowed anything for February so I went ahead and sent a sample to my Kindle.  By the time I finish the sample, I usually have a pretty good idea if I am going to enjoy the book.

Like I said, I totally got sucked into the adventure of Katniss Everdeen and the crazy world of the districts and the Capital.  Once I finished book 1 I couldn't even wait to get the otehrs free the next month - I had to fricken buy them!   Great books!  I will write more next time.   Now I have to go see the fort my kids made out of a yoga mat, pillows, and blankets.

New Patricia Briggs coming March 6th

I've noticed quite a few books that look good coming out in March 2012.  Patrcia Briggs new Alpha and Omega book is called "Fair Game."  She's always a great writer so I am looking forward to this.

Apparently this one revolves around Charles and Anna going to Boston to investigate a serial killer targeting Werewolves.  Could be juicy!  Could be looking at some hospital computer carts.  Briggs doesn't shy away from the darker topics and violency, but she balances it out with good character development and human (or do I say were) interaction.

Lost Girl Marathon Tonight

While the Superbowl is on I will be DVRing the Lost Girl marathon.  This is a Canadian show that was recentky picked up by SyFy. I've only seen one epidode so far and it seems to have promise.  Despite some really bad audio mixing, I am interested in the whole fae/succubus plot.  It's reminiscent of a bunch of paranormal/urban fantasy books that are out there but I gather it's an original story created by Michelle Lovretta.

The succubus as main character is difficult - I mean she is basically a murderer but can't help herself?  But if  I can get past that I just might like the tough but scared Bo.

I also sometimes get aggravated with the fae as a character type due to their promiscuity.  Anything in the  fence pool is free for the takings for the fae, right.   I think it's a generational thing I am too old and stodgy for the younger generation's sex free for all.  (I never really was, although I had my moments I would like to think I was usally at least not just trying to "hook up."

Well the younsters are what they are and they sure aint going to listen to me about it!  I just hope that young girls know their own value and don't fall for the stories and fakes out there.

 

Harley Davidson Birthday Cake

The hubster has to work today so I have to DVR the Super Bowl and we will start watching when he gets home after 8:00.  Poor thing!

I went to the grocery store - man was that a zoo!  People were cutting me off and my darn kids had to be dancing around and getting in other people's way, too.  7 year old (who just turned 7 in December mind you) decided he wanted to look at the birthday cake catalog and pick out a cake for NEXT year.  He wants a Harley Davidson birthday cake that comes with a toy motercycle on it.  Yay.  Next I will have to be shopping for Arai Vector 2 motercycle helmet.

I am really glad that Mr. SciFiJungle got a new job but man, these retail hours suck.  (He is doing computer service.)  Ah well, the money is good to have and this will freshen up his resume after he was out of work for a bit.
