I kept hearing and reading about people reading this book and how good it was. I looked at the description on Amazon and was like "Meh." It sounded really dark and not my usual tastes.
Then the Kindle forum on Ravelry got me more interested, there were alot of the users in the knitting group reading The Passage and discussing the book. I started to weaken and I ordered a sample sent to my Kindle. (I just love that send a sample feature!)
I started reading the sample and it just sucked me right in. Whoosh, there went $9.99 and I ordered the rest of the book.
It's actually a really great book. I love the way the author has of describing people's lives and the choices they have made ( and events in general that they had no control over) that led them to the place they arrive to in the story of the book. Instead of being distracting, the level of detailed description is so rich and interesting it totally draws you in.
You could say that The Passage is a Post-Apocalyptic Vampire story, but that is not doing it justice as a book of actual literary value. And yet, its also got this great zombie apocalypse element to it that's pretty fun to read. Well, that is if you think that glow in the dark "they come from above" tree jumping scary no-redeeming quality virals are fun. Heh heh. They don't have scales but they are glowy and hairless, and really really scary.
The only bad thing - this is the first of three books and now all these fans have to wait a long time until the second book comes out. Boo. Hiss.
