HD Broadcast of Earth from the ISS Coming - UrtheCast

UrtheCast, a Calgary-based company, is set to operate and launch the world's very first live streaming high definition broadcast of Earth. Two HD cameras will be installed aboard the International Space Station.

What a cool idea - this company UrtheCast (pronounced EarthCase) is going to mount 2 HD cameras onto the ISS and broadcast HD quality video of Earth from space.

Designed to be a kind of cross between Google Earth and YouTube, I can see how cool this will be. Supposedly you will be able to zoom into global events and then watch them real time. It will be streamed over the internet.  I wonder what they will do for sounds.  Probably won't need speaker stands for this.

Battle: Los Angeles

I spent time this afternoon watching Battle: Los Angeles.  What an intense movie.  It's really a war movie not as much of a Sci Fi movie, but the fantastcal elements of the aliens and their armour, drones, and ships give an amazing eye appeal to a gritty Marine story.

I am not usually a fan of violent movies, but I have to admit that the violoence fit the plot, and did not come off as gratuitous.  The story was really well done. All in all I would recommend this movie especially as a cathartic experience.  Very emotional!

Mini Review - The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scot Lynch

I just finished readong a great fun book by Scott Lynch called "The Lies of Locke Lamora."   If you took a Fantasy novel and combined it with a grifter story, this is what you would come up with.

Life in he gritty city of Camorr is tough for street orpans.  Lacking any 5th wheel insurance, he joins up with a gang of kids stealing in the streets.   We then follow the life of an master thied Locke Lamora as he and his adopted band of "Gentlemen Bastards" play Robin Hood on the arostocracy of the city.   These are theives with not only a code of honor and great manners, they also are literally priests of the 13th God, and steal for religious purposes.  Sort of.  It's a real hoot, full of action and adventure, and great descriptions of the sort of Medieval Venetian sytle world.

They are the archenemies of the Doctor. In the almost fifty years of the hit television program, they have constantly vexed, distressed, tormented, and sought to “exterminate” their great foe. One of the things about these villains that was so unique was their voice and its constant fixation on the word, “exterminate.”

Very sad to hear of the loss of Roy Skelton who provided the unique voice of the Daleks on Dr. Who.
