NFL Saints offensive guard Jamar Nesbit filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the maker of StarCaps weight-loss supplement. He allegines the diet pills were improperly spiked with a diuretic that is banned by the NFL.
He tested positive for the banned diuretic Bumetanide. According to wikipedia, this drug is often used for weight loss, but also to mask other drugs or steroids.
Several other players around the league have reportedly recently tested positive for Bumetanide, including three other Saints: running back Deuce McAllister and defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant.
This is a cautionary tale on a lot of levels.
1. Be careful of unregulated dietary supplements. The FDA does not regulate herbal and other supplements so if you do not know and trust the manufacturer you may want to stay away.
2. There is no weight loss secret or get thin quick scheme. And if there were, it probably wouldn't be safe. You are better off trying to eat healthy meals, exercise, and get plenty of sleep than to buy Phentermine online.
3. I am taking this whole story with a small grain of salt. Is it possible that any of these players were taking the illegal drug to hide steroid use and also taking StarCaps to try to have an excuse if it was caught. Could they have somehow known about the Bumetanide in StarCaps and were taking advantage of that to sneak in some steroid use? Yes, I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist here.
